Eberechi Eze was on the score sheet twice as Arsenal defeated fierce North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 on Sunday to maintain their five-point lead at the top of the table, Afrosport reports.

The Gunners were just two points clear of Manchester City after the latter’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday. The pressure was therefore on Mikel Arteta’s side, and Eze, who netted a hat-trick in the reverse fixture in November by the same scoreline, got things off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the 32nd minute.

Paris Saint-Germain loanee Randal Kolo Muani equalised just two minutes later but Arsenal came alive in the second half with Eze completing his brace in the 61st minute while Viktor Gyokeres got his own brace to reach double digit league goals this term.

In other results on Sunday, Crystal Palace recorded a 1-0 win at home to 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nigerian forward Tolu Arokodare missing a penalty for Wolves.

Arokodare was unfortunately subject to racist abuse online, less than 24 hours after Wesley Fofana and Hannibal Mejbri were subject to online abuse in the aftermath of Saturday’s game between Chelsea and Burnley.

Wolves in a statement said: “Wolves are disgusted by numerous instances of racist abuse, from multiple perpetrators, directed at Tolu Arokodare on social media following today’s fixture against Crystal Palace.

“There is no place for racism – in football, online, or anywhere in society. We condemn this abhorrent and unlawful behaviour in the strongest possible terms.

“Tolu has our full and unwavering support. No player should be subjected to such hatred simply for doing their job. We stand firmly alongside him, and alongside all footballers who are forced to endure this abuse from anonymous accounts acting with apparent impunity.

“The club has reported the posts to the relevant platforms and will work with the Premier League and the authorities to help identify those responsible and ensure appropriate action is taken. We will continue to take a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination.”

Romaine Mundle was also abused online in Sunderland’s 3-1 defeat at home to Fulham, a game that had Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi score and assist while the Black Cats were handed back-to-back defeats in the Premier League for the first time this season.

Sunderland, in their own statement said: “Sunderland AFC is appalled by the vile online racist abuse directed at Romaine Mundle following today’s Premier League fixture against Fulham.

“The abhorrent behaviour displayed by multiple individuals is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the Club under any circumstances.

“There is no place for racism in our society, and we stand with Romaine, who has our full support.

“The club is actively working with the relevant authorities and online platforms to identify those responsible, and we will take the strongest possible action available to us.

“These individuals do not represent Sunderland AFC, our values, or our community – and they are not welcome on Wearside.”

At the City Ground, a 97th minute goal from Argentina midfielder and 2022 FIFA World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister gave Liverpool a narrow 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
