Exclusive: Nigeria legend Peter Rufai reveals secret behind 37-year-old hairstyle

Former Nigeria goalkeeper Peter Rufai brands himself with a particular style of punk on his head.

The hairstyle has been a signature for the 60-year-old football legend since he moved to Belgian club Lokeren for his first European adventure in 1987.

Rufai, in an exclusive chat with Afrosport, revealed how circumstances in Europe coerced him to dump his afro hair for an unusual punk trim.

The former Super Eagles goalkeeper played at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, and he was part of the Nigeria squad that lifted 1994 Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

Rufai takes pride in his hairstyle and he does not miss a moment to tidy the hair before any function – formal or informal.

The legendary shot-stopper, nicknamed Dodo May an a, is currently one of the contributing analysts for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Afrosport TV – the Free-to-Air rightsholder and Pay TV license holders in Nigeria.

After one of his appearances on Afrosport TV, Rufai said: “My hairstyle has been my signature since my playing days. I started with afro but when I went to Europe, I had to spend about an hour combing my hair to get off sand, grass after my first training session at my new club.

“After doing this routine for a season, I told myself I need to find another way to take care of my hair so it was at the moment, I took the decision to go with this style.

“I have been carrying this hairstyle since 1987 and I’ve been consistent with it.”

Rufai enjoyed a nomadic playing career in Europe with stints in Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal after dazzling in the Nigerian league with Stationery Stores.
