Enugu Rangers coach Fidelis Ilechukwu believes Finidi George’s strides as the Super Eagles’ new head coach would positively affect the image of the Nigeria Professional Football League.
Ilechukwu expressed his delight to see an indigenous coach succeed Jose Peseiro who left the Super Eagles role after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in February.
Ilechukwu’s Rangers currently sit atop the NPFL table with a two-point lead above second-placed Enyimba who are led by Finidi George.
“I’m very happy for Finidi George when I got the news this afternoon. I join hands to pray for Finidi George to succeed because his success will affect the NPFL,” Ilechukwu told Afrosport.
“It means a lot to us as coaches in the NPFL to see one of us lead the country’s national team. He has shown that he knows the team and he is capable.”
George, in March, led Nigeria in international friendly games against Ghana and Mali in Morocco.
The Super Eagles defeated the Black Stars of Ghana 2-1 then suffered a 2-0 loss to Mali in the North African country.
Following Monday’s announcement, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is expected the reveal the rest of the Super Eagles backroom staff that will provide support for Finidi George in his new role.
