Ex-Spain & Liverpool goalkeeper Reina announces retirement

Former Spain and Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina will retire from football at the end of this season, Afrosport reports.

Reina, who currently plays for Italian club Como, will feature in his final game when they take on Inter Milan in Serie A on Friday.

He took to social media on Tuesday to make the announcement, thanking his family and fans for their support through the years.

“It has been much longer than I ever dreamed, yet it feels so short that I’d live it all over again,” the Spaniard wrote.

“With only three days left until the ‘last dance’, so many emotions, people, and memories come to my mind, and all I can do is sum them up in one huge THANK YOU.

“I’m proud and at peace with every moment I’ve experienced, the tough ones because they taught me, and the good ones because they’ve made me extraordinarily happy.

“I thank God for blessing me with a family who is responsible for every good thing that’s happened to me; even a lifetime wouldn’t be enough to repay them.”

The 42-year-old was part of the Spain squad that won the 2010 World Cup and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.

A Barcelona Academy graduate, he joined Villarreal in 2002 before securing a move to Liverpool in 2005, winning the FA Cup, League Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup. He also won the Premier League Golden Glove award three times in a row (2005-2008), having kept the most clean sheets in the English top-flight.

Reina played over 390 times for Liverpool across nine years before spells at top European clubs like Napoli, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Aston Villa, Lazio and Villarreal.

The veteran shot-stopper joined Como in July 2024 and has featured 12 times for the Serie A club this season, including 11 in the Italian top-flight.
