Former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has given his verdict on the chances of Senegal progressing from the Group A of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The 69-year-old German coach tipped the reigning African champions as one of the two teams in Group A to progress to the knockout round.
Rohr expressed his likeness for the array of talents in the Senegalese side as he expects them to go far in Qatar.
“In Sadio Mane, they have a star who can make a difference on his own and in Kalidou Koulibaly, a very strong, athletic defender at the back,” Rohr told Wettbasis.
With Mane now confirmed out of the World Cup, the German tactician believes Senegal’s strength lies in Cisse’s experience as the team’s head coach.
He said: “That’s very rare in Africa, they have had the same coach in Aliou Cisse for over six years. You have several tactical options.”
Group A consists of host nation Qatar, European giants Netherlands, Ecuador and the Teranga Lions.
Qatar lost 2-0 to Ecuador in the opening game and Rohr believes the Teranga Lions can give the Netherlands a ‘run for their money’ in the second group fixture later on Monday.
Senegal will face the Netherlands at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.
