Ex-Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal free from cancer

Former Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has announced he has been cured of cancer, Afrosport reports.

The 73-year-old Dutch man announced three years ago he was suffering from prostate cancer while he was in charge of the Oranje at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Van Gaal left after the Netherlands exited in the quarter-finals after losing to eventual champions Argentina and has not held any managerial position ever since.

“I’m no longer bothered by cancer,” he said. “Two years ago, I had a few operations. It was all bad then. But it all worked out in the end.

“I have check-ups every few months, and that’s going well. I’m getting fitter and fitter.”

Van Gaal’s managerial career saw him have stints with Ajax, Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar, Bayern Munich, Manchester United and three stints with the Netherlands national team.

He is currently a special advisor at Ajax.
