Ex-Man United boss Ten Hag opens up on player struggles with criticism

‘We are not helping Hojlund’ – Amorim on Danish striker’s goal drought

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has stated that players in the current dispensation of football find it difficult to deal with criticism compared to his era that had thicker skin towards it, Afrosport reports.

The Dutchman was relieved of his duties last October despite signing a contract extension in the summer.

His stint was Old Trafford was notable for having disciplinary issues with some players, notably Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford.

Speaking to SEG Stories, he said: “This generation usually find it difficult to deal with criticism. Criticism really gets to them.

“The generation that I grew up in had much thicker skin. You could be much more direct.

“I was approached much more directly. If I would do that with my current group of players I would demotivate them.

“If you do that to the current generation they find it offensive.”

Ten Hag won the FA Cup and EFL Cup during his two-and-a-half seasons at United, finishing third in his first campaign followed by eighth the season after.
