European football expert hails Iwobi’s impact at Fulham

European football expert Julien Laurens says Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi is not getting the recognition he deserves in English football, Afrosport reports.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live following Fulham’s 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday, Laurens praised Iwobi and manager Marco Silva, highlighting their contributions and the lack of wider appreciation for their efforts.

Iwobi, who joined Fulham from Everton in 2023, has impressed this season with a string of strong performances. The Nigeria international was particularly outstanding in Fulham’s recent 3-1 win over Brentford, where he scored and provided an assist.

Laurens suggested that both Iwobi and Silva could reach even greater heights with better support and investment.

“Imagine what Marco Silva could do if he had proper investment,” Laurens said. “I think they are underrated. I think Iwobi is underrated and Silva is massively underrated in this country.”

Iwobi, who has 16 goals and 10 assists in 84 games for the Cottagers, is a key cog in Silva’s side, contributing with both creativity and work rate in midfield.

Since he switched allegiance to Nigeria, Iwobi has also regularly featured for the Super Eagles playing an integral role as the team reached the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He was also part of the squad to the 2019, 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
