Euro 2024: Southgate reveals reason behind England’s final loss to Spain

Euro 2024: Bellingham devastated by ‘cruel’ England final defeat

England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed that not having enough control of possession was the reason why the Three Lions lost to Spain in Sunday’s Euro 2024 final.

Southgate’s side were beaten 2-1, having only 37% of possession. They were denied the chance to lift a first European title after losing to Italy on penalties three years ago.

Regardless of the defeat, Southgate was pleased with his players and their performance during the tournament.

“Very proud of the group of players they couldn’t have given me any more. They couldn’t have given the country anymore. So, ultimately, we we lost to the better side,” he said.

“And, we have to reflect on how that happened, but it’s very clear in my mind the game. We, as I said, for me, the key was possession of the ball tonight, and we didn’t have enough control.”

England’s loss has led to questions on Southgate’s future but he did not give a definitive response.

“Well it’s hard to reflect so soon after a defeat like this, of course, to take England to two finals has never been done, but we came here to win, and, we haven’t been able to do that,” he added.

England will now turn their attention to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, the United States and Mexico.
