Eredivisie: Nigeria’s Akpom on target in Ajax and Almere four-goal stalemate

Nigerian forward Chuba Akpom scored for the third consecutive game in the Dutch Eredivisie as Ajax were held to a 2-2 draw by Almere City on Sunday.

The former Middlesbrough forward scored Ajax’s equaliser in the 68th minute for his fourth league goal of the season.

Jochem van de Kemp put the hosts ahead at the Yanmar Stadion in the 67th minute after a very lethargic first 45 minutes.

Akpom, who came on as a substitute, drew the 36-time Eredivisie champions level with his first touch just seconds after being on the pitch. He received the ball from Dutch forward Brian Brobbey inside the box before sending in a left-footed finish into the bottom corner.

Bosnian midfielder Benjamin Tahirovic, who joined Ajax from Roma in the summer, put them ahead in the 82nd minute with his first goal for the club. The 20-year-old was once again set up by Brobbey’s brilliant hold-up play inside the box before ripping a left-footed rocket inside the top corner.

Ajax were on course for their third straight win in the league since losing heavily to PSV Eindhoven, but French forward Thomas Robinet had other ideas as he drew Almere level from the penalty spot in the third minute of stoppage time.

The 2021–22 Eredivisie champions move into 12th place in the standings with 13 points from eleven matches, while Almere, who played one more game, sits in 11th place with 13 points.

After the international break, Ajax will welcome Vitesse to the Johan Cruyff Arena, while Almere will host Heracles Almelo at home.
