Emilo Nsue: AFCON 2023 top scorer retires from international football

AFCON 2023 top scorer Emilio Nsue suspended indefinitely by Equatorial Guinea

Equatorial Guinea forward Emilo Nsue has announced his retirement from international football.

The 34-year-old’s retirement comes after he was suspended by his country’s football association for misconduct, with the nation’s vice president, Teodora Nguema confirming the news.

“After discussions, captain Emilio Nsue López has declared his retirement from the national team. I acknowledge his contributions over the 12 years he has represented the Nzalang Nacional and wish him success in his future endeavours,” Nguema stated in an X post.

Nsue won the Golden Boot at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after scoring five goals, all of which came in the group stage.

The former Middlesbrough and Birmingham City player began his international career in 2013 after representing Spain, where he was born, at youth level between 2005 and 2011.

Nsue ended his senior career with 22 goals as Equatorial Guinea’s all-time top scorer and 44 caps, the third highest behind Federico Bikoro and Basilio Ndong.

He participated at four AFCON tournaments (2015 as hosts, 2021 and 2023) with Equatorial Guinea reaching the knockout phase on each occasion.
