The President of Egypt Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has ordered a complete overhaul of the sport federations that participated in this summer’s Paris Olympic games following a report from the country’s sports minister.
The Egyptian president unveiled a comprehensive plan to overhaul the country’s Olympic strategy despite the North African nation picking up three medals in Paris – one gold, one silver and one bronze – ranking 52nd on the medal table.
Ahmed El-Gendy claimed a gold medal in modern pentathlon, Sara Samir won silver in weightlifting, and 21-year-old fencer Mohamed El-Sayed took home the bronze medal.
El-Sisi’s mandate includes a thorough expenditure check and performance review to identify areas for improvement and optimise fund allocation in future Games.
The reforms aim to address key issues, particularly in federations that had negative results in the Paris Games, which will face financial constraints through limited funds. Additionally, Egypt will focus on participating in sports where it has a competitive advantage, reducing participation in non-competitive events.
To enhance efficiency, Al-Sisi plans to reduce administrative and technical staff within Olympic delegations. Relevant ministries will also be tasked with preparing future Olympic athletes, ensuring a more coordinated approach.
The president’s overhaul plan will be presented to the cabinet for approval, with a call to prioritize amending the sports law for the House of Representatives’ review. This reform is expected to enhance Egypt’s Olympic performance and foster a more efficient sports ecosystem.
