EFL Cup: Southampton defeats Stoke as Brentford win on penalties to reach quarter-finals

Southampton and Brentford became the first two sides to secure their place in the EFL Cup quarter-finals following their wins over Stoke City and Sheffield Wednesday respectively on Tuesday.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis scored in the 15th minute to put Southampton ahead before Adam Armstrong doubled the lead from the spot in the 35th minutesl after Jaden Dixon brought down Yukinari Sugawara .

However, Ashley Phillips equalised for the visitors just before half time, as Stoke levelled nine minutes after half time, when Tom Canon smashed the loose ball into the roof of the net.

Two minutes from time, Saints full back James Bree scored the winner as Southampton edged past the Championship side 3-2.

At the Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford defeats Sheffield 5-4 on penalties after it ended 1-1 in regular time.

The Premier League side took the lead through Kevin Schade’s 11th-minute goal after his initial effort was saved by Wednesday keeper Pierce Charles.

But Wednesday, levelled in the 57th minute
after a fine Djeidi Gassama long-range strike – found the back of the net from 35 yards out.

Both teams had to settle for a penalties after neither sides managed to find the winner at the end of 90 minutes.

With the first nine penalties scored, Mark Flekken prevented sudden death when he saved Liam Palmer’s penalty to send the Bees through.
