EFL Cup: Liverpool’s Ekitike reportedly faces fine for needless red card

EFL Cup: Slot hits out at Ekitike for red card in Liverpool win over Southampton

Hugo Ekitike faces the possibility of being fined by Liverpool following his sending off in the 2-1 EFL Cup win over Southampton on Tuesday, Afrosport reports.

The 23-year-old French striker of Cameroonian heritage came on as a second-half substitute for Alexander Isak and scored the winner in the 85th minute, but was sent off after collecting a second yellow card for taking off his shirt while celebrating his goal.

He received the first yellow card moments after he came on for throwing the ball away in frustration, and will now serve a one-game ban by missing this weekend’s Premier League match against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot was not impressed with the sending off, calling it “stupid” and “needless” while the player took to social media to apologise for his actions.

According to the Daily Mail, Ekitike is likely to be handed a fine that will see him forfeit two weeks of his wages.

He joined the Merseyside outfit from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £69 million summer move and has scored five goals in eight competitive games.
