EFL Cup: Iwobi scores first Fulham goal; Senegal’s Jackson scores in Chelsea win

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi starred in Fulham’s 2-1 win over Norwich City in the EFL Cup at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night.

The 27-year-old former Everton midfielder got his first goal and assisted in his first start for Marco Silva’s side as they progressed into the fourth round of the tournament, where they will travel to face Ipswich Town.

Iwobi’s cutback was sent into an empty net by Brazilian forward Carlos Vinicius in the 12th minute to put Fulham ahead. Iwobi got his maiden club goal for the Cottagers in the 72nd minute.

Norwich pulled one back three minutes later through Spanish winger Borja Sainz, but the home team held on for victory to improve to a three-game unbeaten run and move into the next round.

At Stamford Bridge, Senegalese forward Nicolas Jackson got the only goal of the game as Chelsea defeated high-flying Brighton and Hove Albion 1-0 for their first win in four games.

The former Villarreal forward got his second goal for the Blues with a well-taken finish five minutes after the restart to help them with their first goal in the month of September. Mauricio Pochettino’s side will now face Blackburn Rovers in the fourth round.

In the other games in round three, Liverpool came back from a goal down again to defeat Leicester City 3-1 at Anfield thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Diogo Jota, canceling out Kasey McAteer’s opener for the Foxes.

Dominic Solanke continued his impressive scoring with a goal in Bournemouth’s 2-0 win over Stoke City, with Joe Rothwell scoring the Cherries second goal of the game.

Reiss Nelson scored Arsenal’s only goal at the Gtech Community Stadium, helping Mikel Arteta’s side defeat Brentford 1-0. At the Villa Park, goals from James Garner and Dominic Calvert-Lewin helped Everton to a 2-1 win over Aston Villa despite Boubacar Kamara’s late effort, to propel Sean Dyche’s team to to wins from as many games.

Newcastle United held on for a 1-0 victory over Manchester City, with the eight-time winners undone by an Alexander Isak goal.
