EFL Cup: Holders Liverpool outclass Tottenham to book Wembley ticket

Liverpool thrashed Tottenham 4-0 on Thursday in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final clash at Anfield, Afrosport reports.

The Reds overturned a 1-0 first leg deficit to win 4-1 on aggregate and book a ticket to the final at Wembley, where they’ll be looking to defend their crown against Newcastle.

Arne Slot’s men got in front in the 34th minute through Cody Gakpo. The Dutch forward scored his fifth goal in the competition this season with a sublime half volley from a Mohamed Salah cross.

The visitors were forced into a change just before the halftime break with French forward Mathys Tel replacing Richarlison for his Spurs debut.

It was, however, all Liverpool after the restart with the holders doubling their lead in the 51st minute through Salah. The Egyptian made no mistake from the spot, sending Antonin Kinsky the wrong way for his 26th goal in all competitions this campaign.

Hungarian international Dominik Szoboszlai made it three to Liverpool in the 75th minute. The 24-year-old midfielder slotted the ball calmly past Kinsky after being teed up by Conor Bradley.

The Reds completed their rout five minutes later through the head of Virgil Van Dijk, who got his 26th goal for Liverpool in all competitions, the most of any Premier League defender since January 2018.

Liverpool, in search of their 11th League Cup title, will take on Newcastle in the final on Sunday, 16 March.
