Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, the D’Tigers, alongside 15 other African countries, will compete for a ticket to the 2027 FIBA World Cup, with the qualifying series set to begin in November, Afrosport reports.
Having successfully turned around their luck and secured a ticket to the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket set to take place in Angola from 12-24 August, the D’Tigers will now shift their attention to booking a spot at the FIBA World Cup in Qatar.
Nigeria has qualified for the FIBA World Cup three times, including finishing in the round of 16 in 2006, but missed out on qualifying for the last edition in 2023, which was co-hosted by Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
The D’Tigers will be joined by 15 other African countries that successfully qualified for the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket tournament, including Angola, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, and Egypt.
These 16 teams will participate in the FIBA World Cup 2027 Qualifiers, with the draw, which determines their pathways to the final tournament, scheduled to take place on 13 May.
Five nations represented Africa at the last tournament—Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Cape Verde, and South Sudan, with the last two making their World Cup debuts.
