Gianluigi Donnarumma has finally broken his silence after being left out of the Paris Saint-Germain travelling squad for Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup, Afrosport reports.
The European champions will take on Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper, who played a pivotal role in PSG’s historic treble last season, was a notable absentee from the squad list announced on Tuesday by manager Luis Enrique.
“Donnarumma is out of the squad as it’s my own decision. I am 100% responsible,” the Spaniard said. “I want a different kind of goalkeeper and I made this decision. Giorgio is one of the best goalkeepers in the whole world”.
Meanwhile, the Italy international has released a statement, claiming “someone has decided” it was time for him to leave the club. He thanked supporters for their backing and expressed his desire to “say goodbye” in the right way.
“From the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain,” Donnarumma said in a post on social media.
“Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success. I am disappointed and disheartened.
“I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done. If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it. I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights, and of you, who made me feel at home.
“To my teammates – my second family – thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers.
“Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you, Paris.”
His current contract with PSG runs until June 2026, but the goalkeeper is understood to be surplus to requirements following the arrival of French shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier from Lille.
The former AC Milan star is locked on to secure a move away from the Parc des Princes this summer and is already attracting interest from several leading European clubs. According to reports, Manchester City are among those keen to secure his signature this summer, with the PSG valuing him at £26 million.
Donnarumma made 47 appearances for PSG last season, helping them claim the Ligue 1 title, Coupe de France, Champions League and Trophee des Champions.
