Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley for the rest of the 2022-23 season.
The Netherlands international spent the first half of the season at Besiktas where he scored eight goals and provided four assists in 16 Turkish Super Lig games.
Weghorst reached a deal for his loan contract to be terminated at Besiktas which paved the way for him to move to Old Trafford.
The 30-year-old will unite with his countryman Erik ten Hag who admitted United’s need for a striker earlier this month following the termination of Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract in November.
“I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United. I’ve played against the club in the past and it’s a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt,” Weghorst said on the club website.
“I’ve seen United’s progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can’t wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims.
“Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here.
“I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting involved straight away.”
Weghorst could be registered in time and be involved in Saturday’s crunch derby game against crosstown rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.
He joined Burnley from Wolfsburg for £12 million in January 2022 and scored two goals in 20 Premier League appearances as the Clarets relegated to the Championship.
Weghorst is recently remembered for scoring two late comeback goals for the Netherlands during their 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-final with Argentina which the South American giants won on penalties and ultimately the tournament.
