Done Deal: Nigerian defender Plumptre joins Saudi’s Al-Ittihad Ladies

Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad Ladies, the club announced on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old, who shone for Nigeria at this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, finally puts an end to the discussions surrounding her club career following the expiration of her contact with English Women’s Super League (WSL) side Leicester City.

The Nigerian defender was unveiled with a video on the club’s official social media platforms, and she wasn’t the only one they signed; they also announced the signing of Moroccan midfielder Salma Amani.

”Grateful to sign for Al Ittihad,” Plumptre wrote on her twitter platform after signing for the Riyadh club

“Excited to start this journey alongside some incredible human beings.

“My journey of stepping more into myself continues…it’s more than football.”

Plumptre returned to Leicester in December 2019 after initially spending seven years there during her youth years. She played for the Foxes for three years, helping them win the FA Women’s Championship and subsequently gain promotion to the top flight.

She played about 90 games for the Foxes, scoring four goals and providing numerous assists.

Plumptre became an official Nigerian international in February 2022, having played for England across other age grades. She represented the Falcons at the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations that same year and was part of the team that helped Nigeria reach the round of 16 in Australia and New Zealand this year.
