Done Deal: Man Utd snap up Bryan Mbeumo in £71m move from Brentford

Manchester United on Monday completed the £71 million signing of Cameroon forward Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, Afrosport reports.

The 25-year-old has penned a five-year contract with the Red Devils, with the option to extend for another year. United will pay an initial £65 million in four instalments, while an additional £6m will cover performance-related bonuses.

The Cameroon international becomes United’s third signing of the summer, joining forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and left-back Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno.

Ruben Amorim’s men will depart Manchester on Thursday for their pre-season tour of the United States, and Mbeumo is set to travel with the squad.

“As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up,” he said.

“My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.

“Everybody told me about the environment that is being created here and how exciting the plans are for the future. This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans, we are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies.”

Mbeumo had his heart set on a move to Old Trafford this summer and turned down interest from other clubs. United’s first two bids were rejected by Brentford, but the London-based club finally accepted an improved third offer last week.

He will wear the number 19 shirt at United, the same jersey he donned across six years at the Gtech Community Stadium with Brentford.

“Bryan’s goals and assists record in the Premier League is exceptional, his remarkable consistency has put him among the most productive players in England for the last three seasons,” said United director of football Jason Wilcox.

“Bryan’s belief in our project and determination to join the club confirmed he was the perfect fit for Manchester United and the culture we are developing.”

Mbeumo arrived in England back in 2019 from French side Troyes and quickly became a fan favourite at Brentford. The forward notched up 70 goals and 51 assists in 242 appearances, including a standout campaign last year with 20 goals in 38 league games.

He becomes the Bees’ most expensive sale, topping the £40m they received from Al-Ahli for England striker Ivan Toney last August.
