French Ligue 2 club Auxerre have confirmed the appointment of former France striker Djibril Cisse as a first-team coach.
Cisse started his professional career at Auxerre and he has been tasked to train the first-team and reserve-team attackers for the 2023-24 season.
Auxerre were relegated to the French second division last season after they finished 17th in the Ligue 1 table. They were the second-lowest scoring team in the French top-flight last season, with 35 goals scored.
“Our former striker, who is going to pass his coaching diplomas, will intervene every week with the attackers of the professional group and the reserve team,” read a statement on Auxerre website.
“He is back ! 19 years after his departure as a player for the legendary Liverpool FC, Djibril Cissé returns home. The top scorer in Ligue 1 in 2002 and 2004 will intervene every week with our attackers, in close collaboration with Christophe Pélissier and his technical staff.”
Cisse signed for Auxerre at the age of 15 and he spent six years at the club, scoring 90 goals in 166 appearances before he left for Liverpool in 2004.
The 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup with France has been involved in modelling since he drew the curtain on his football career in 2021.
