Sebastien Haller found the back of the net twice as Borussia Dortmund recoded a comfortable 6-1 win over Schott Mainz in the first round of the DFB Cup on Saturday.
The Ivory Coast international recovered from testicular cancer last season, scoring nine goals in 19 Bundesliga games after his comeback. Dortmund however missed out on the title on the final day with a 2-2 draw with FSV Mainz 05, Haller missing a penalty in that match.
All that was behind at the Mewa Arena when he opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. It became 2-0 to Dortmund via Julian Brandt before Schott Mainz pulled one back thanks to Nils Gans in the 34th minute. There was however an instant response from Dortmund as Haller completed his brace for a 3-1 half-time lead.

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, Donyell Malen and Cameroon-born Youssoufa Moukoko added their names to the scoresheet in the second half to complete the comprehensive victory that sees Dortmund easily through to the second round of the DFB Cup.
Edin Terzic’s men will open their 2023-24 Bundesliga season at home to FC Cologne next Saturday.
