Dessers proud of netting landmark 50th Rangers after mixed season

Osimhen acknowledges impact of Galatasaray teammates in setting club record

Cyriel Dessers was thrilled to score a landmark 50th competitive goal for Rangers after netting a brace in Wednesday’s 3-1 Scottish Premiership win over Dundee United at the Ibrox, Afrosport reports.

The Super Eagles forward’s two goals took him to 28 goals for the season, 17 of them in the Premiership.

Despite those numbers, Dessers has come under intense criticism from fans this term due to his tendency to miss chances.

The 30-year-old also thanked Gers captain James Tavernier for giving him the opportunity to score from the penalty spot which led to his 50th goal.

“We spoke about it a little bit earlier in the week and I have to thank him for letting me take it,” Dessers told the club website.

“It’s a beautiful moment for me, the 50th goal and to score it here at Ibrox. That’s something I am very proud of and it’s a big milestone in my career.

“It’s been a season with a few bumps, maybe a little bit too many, but I think it was a nice moment after the game for everybody – the fans, the players and the staff.

Meanwhile, interim Rangers boss Barry Ferguson praised for his character in the face of criticism.

“He comes in for unfair criticism in my opinion. One thing about him is he always gives 100 per cent and his goal return this season has been phenomenal,” he said.

“He has 28 goals this season and I am delighted for him. I’m sure he’ll want me to start him on Saturday so he can hopefully get one or two more.”

Rangers are second on the Scottish Premiership table and will finish their season away at Hibernian on Saturday afternoon.
