Denmark coach Riemer raises concern clubless Eriksen poses for national team

Denmark national team coach Brian Riemer has revealed that Christian Eriksen remaining without a club poses a big problem for his squad ahead of next month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Afrosport reports.

Eriksen has been without a club since his contract with Manchester United expired at the end of June. Though the 33-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs like Burnley, Wrexham, Fenerbahce, Besiktas, Trabzonspor, as well as clubs from Spain and Germany, no deal has materialised.

Riemer will announce his squad next Monday for the games against Scotland and Greece on September 5 and 8, respectively, but it is yet to be seen if Eriksen will be on the list.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has been an essential part of the Denmark squad since he made his debut in 2010, with 46 goals, 34 assists and 144 caps to his name.

“Of course, it is a big problem for Christian and for us that a player with over 140 international caps – who has done a fantastic job for this nation for many years – suddenly finds himself in this difficult situation. It will also be a problem for us. It would be completely crazy of me to say otherwise,” Riemer told Danish channel TV 2 Sport.

“Christian has not been able to find the right place yet, and that means that since we parted ways in June, he has not trained at a club, and he has not played any matches. If I said that it was not a challenge, it would all be completely irrelevant.”

Eriksen has also featured for Ajax Amsterdam, Inter Milan and Brentford, winning the Serie A in 2020 and three Eredivisie titles.

He suffered a cardiac arrest during the Euro 2020 tournament in 2021 but returned to competitive action a year later and was part of the Denmark squad during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
