Darwin Nunez: Liverpool forward handed five-game Uruguay ban by CONMEBOL

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has been handed a five-game international ban due to an altercation with spectators during Uruguay’s Copa America semifinal defeat to Colombia in July.

The 25-year-old was part of the players involved in a confrontation with fans after their 1-0 loss to Colombia at the Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina, a game in which the two teams finished with ten players.

After launching an investigation into the matter, the South American football governing body (CONMEBOL) announced on Wednesday that five players had been issued bans, including Nunez, while eleven others were also fined.

The Liverpool forward has also been handed a $20,000 fine, and he will now miss Uruguay’s World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay (Sept 7), Venezuela (Sept 10), Peru (Oct 11), Ecuador (Oct 16), and Colombia (Nov 14).

Meanwhile, Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has received a four-game ban and a $16,000 fine.

Napoli defender Mathias Olivera, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, and Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez have all received three-game bans and a fine of $12,000 each.

Six other players, including Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez and former Manchester United winger Facundo Pellistri, were fined $5,000 each, while the Uruguayan FA has been fined $20,000.
