Copa America: Monaco condemn racist abuse towards Balogun after USA loss

French Ligue 1 club Monaco have condemned the racist abuses targeted at United States of America striker Folarin Balogun after their 2-1 defeat to Panama on Thursday.

Balogun opened the scoring for the United States at the Mercedez Benz Stadium with his strike in the 22nd minute but the host country failed to protect their lead.

Goals from Cesar Blackman and and Jose Fajardo in each half of the game condemned USA to their first loss in the tournament.

Following the game, the 22-year-old took to social media to reveal hate messages he received on his personal accounts and the US Soccer have also joined Monaco in condemning the act, with statements that there is no racism in football.

“AS Monaco express full support for its player Folarin Balogun, who has been the target of racist and insulting comments online after the Copa America game between the United States and Panama.” the club statement read.

“The Club strongly condemns all acts of racism and discrimination. These behaviours are in total contradiction with the values of our club and the sporting spirit we defend.”

Balogun has scored in each of the two games he has played at the ongoing Copa America with a goal against Panama and Bolivia.

The former Arsenal youngster will be looking to continue his fine run when the Stars and Stripes battle Uruguay in their final group match on Tuesday, July 2.
