World football governing body, FIFA have unanimously taken the decision to approve a 32-team format for the 2025 Club World Cup.
The plans to expand the intercontinental club competition was announced last December but it was made official at the FIFA’s Council meeting at its headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland on Tuesday.
The revamped tournament will produce 12 teams from the Europe (UEFA), six from South America (CONMEBOL), four each from Africa (CAF), Asia (AFC) and North and Central America (CONCACAF). Oceania (OFC) will have one team while there will be a team representing the host country.
There were however no details on the qualification procedure for the expanded tournament.
FIFA also confirmed the 2023 Club World Cup will take place in Saudi Arabia between December 12 and 22 with the current seven-team format.
Real Madrid are the reigning champions after defeating Saudi outfit Al Hilal 5-3 in Rabat, Morocco on Saturday for their record-extending fifth title.
