Club World Cup: Al Ahly finish in fourth place

Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly ended the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup in fourth place after losing 4-2 to Brazilian giants Flamengo in the bronze medal match on Saturday.

The Red Devils had suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the semi-finals and were looking to end the intercontinental club competition in third place for the third consecutive time.

It didn’t start that way in Tanger as Gabriel Barbosa gave Flamengo the lead from the penalty spot in the 11th minute.

Al Ahly equalised seven minutes to the half time break through Ahmed Abdelkader. They had the opportunity to make it 2-1 in the 58th minute but Ali Maaloul missed from the penalty spot. It was finally 2-1 to Marcel Koller’s men on the hour mark with Abdelkader completing his brace.

Al Ahly were reduced to 10 men in the 69th minute after right-back Khaled Abdelfattah was given a straight red card for making a foul on the opposition’s last man. It was all Flamengo from there as Pedro netted a brace and Barbosa scored his second from the spot as well.

Al Ahly will now return to Egyptian Premier League duties where they top the standings and face Ismaily on Tuesday before opening up their CAF Champions League campaign at Sudanese giants Al Hilal Omdurman next Saturday.
