Chuba Akpom joins Ipswich Town on loan from Ajax

Chuba Akpom has returned to the EFL Championship after completing a loan move from Eredivisie giants Ajax to Ipswich Town, Afrosport reports.

The 29-year-old English forward of Nigerian heritage will spend the 2025-26 season at Portman Road with an obligation to buy him if the Tractor Boys win promotion back to the Premier League.

He was previously on the books of Middlesbrough between 2020 and 2023, scoring 34 goals in 82 appearances.

He was out of favour at Ajax last season due to his high wages and spent time on loan at French Ligue 1 side Lille where he scored three goals in 16 games.

Akpom was of interest to Birmingham City, Middlesbrough, and Ipswich this summer. He was close to joining the former and had a medical cancelled after the latter came up with an offer that he ultimately accepted.

“I was really excited when I heard of the interest and I’m delighted to have joined a club with such big ambitions,” Chuba told the club website.

“I watch a lot of football and have always thought Ipswich would suit my style, so this move makes perfect sense.

“I have had lots of good experiences over the last few years, at Ajax and playing in the Champions League with Lille, and I feel like all of these have improved me as a player and helped me be the person I am now.

“I’m here to do as much as I can do to help the team, in the changing room and on the pitch, and I’ll bring a winning mentality here.”

Akpom, whose career began at Arsenal, has vast experience in the Championship, playing previously for Brentford, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Hull City and Brighton & Hove Albion. He also played for Sint-Truiden in Belgium and PAOK in Greece.
