Chelsea thump Real Betis in Conference League final to complete European sweep

Chelsea etched their names in European history books on Wednesday following a 4-1 comeback win over Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League final, Afrosport reports.

The Blues, who were dominant in the second half of their clash against Betis at the Wroclaw Stadium in Poland, became the first team to win all five European club competitions.

Chelsea have undoubtedly been the standout team in the Conference League this season and were huge favourites going into Wednesday’s final.

The Premier League giants, however, fell behind to an early goal from Morocco International Abde Ezzalzouli. The 23-year-old found the back of the net in the ninth minute, firing into the bottom corner, following a pass from Isco.

Chelsea looked flat and lethargic, and manager Enzo Maresca was forced to make some changes in the second half to inject a bit more life into his side.

The changes, meanwhile, paid off, as England International Cole Palmer, who was named Player of the Match, found his magic when it was most needed.

Palmer set up Enzo Fernandez for Chelsea’s equaliser in the 65th minute before also turning provider for Nicolas Jackson’s 70th-minute goal to complete the turnaround.

Fernandez beat goalkeeper Adrian with a header from close range, while Jackson met Palmer’s cross with his chest for his 13th goal of the season.

Chelsea got their third goal of the game through Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho, who came on for Neto. The 23-year-old, after being teed up by fellow substitute Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, found the top corner with a brilliant technique.

Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo added a fourth in second-half stoppage time to put the tie to bed.

Chelsea’s triumph ensured they have now won all major UEFA tournaments: Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Super Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup.

The Blues also became the first foreign team to defeat a Spanish team in a final since 2002, ending their 27-game winning run across men’s European club or international football.
