Chelsea smash club record to sign United States star Alyssa Thompson

Chelsea have completed the signing of United States international Alyssa Thompson from Angel City FC for what is believed to be a new club-record transfer fee, Afrosport reports.

The Women’s Super League champions are reported to have paid just under £1 million for the 20-year-old, who has signed a five-year deal with the London club, keeping her at Kingsmeadow until 2030.

The move surpasses Chelsea’s previous transfer record set in January, when they signed Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave for £900,000—a world record fee at the time.

“Chelsea is such an amazing club, one of the best in the world,” Thompson told the club website. “Being able to play with players that are the best in the world is an amazing opportunity at such a young age, and I want to learn, grow and develop a lot.

“I feel like Chelsea is such an amazing environment to do that in.”

Thompson joined Angel City in January 2023 and leaves the National Women’s Soccer League side having scored 15 goals in 69 appearances. She netted six times in 16 matches during the current NWSL season.

On the international stage, she made her senior debut for the USA at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and has since earned 22 caps, scoring three goals. She will wear the number 12 shirt at Chelsea.

Her arrival comes at a crucial time for the Blues, with Colombian striker Mayra Ramírez ruled out until January with a hamstring injury, and Lauren James also sidelined for the opening match of their WSL title defence against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.
