CHAN 2024: Senegal, Sudan progress into semi-finals

Current African Nations Championship holders, Senegal, and also Sudan, progressed into the semi-finals of the 2024 edition after respective victories over co-hosts Uganda (1-0) and Algeria ( 4-3 via penalties after a 1-1 draw) on Saturday, Afrosport reports.

The Teranga Lions finished second in Group D, tied on five points with Sudan.

The Ugandans, meanwhile, finished top of Group C ahead of Algeria, South Africa, Guinea and Niger but were let down by Oumar Ba’s 62nd-minute strike, which ended their CHAN journey in the capital city of Kampala.

The journey in Kampala, however, continued for the Senegalese, who will now have a chance to make it back-to-back finals with a semi-final meeting with two-time champions Morocco.

Meanwhile, in Zanzibar City, an Ayoub Ghezala own goal put the Sudanese in front three minutes into the second half before Algeria got redemption from Soufiane Bayazid’s equaliser in the 73rd minute.

There was however no way through for the CHAN 2022 runners-up as Mehdi Merghem and Zakaria Draoui missed their penalties in the shootout to give the Sudanese a 4-2 win and set up a semi-final meeting with high-flying Madagascar in Dar es Salaam.
