Morocco became the outright most successful team in the history of the African Nations Championship after claiming their third title with a 3-2 win over Madagascar in the final of the 2024 edition in Nairobi on Saturday, Afrosport reports.
The Atlas Lions dispatched previous champions Senegal on penalties in the semi-finals while the Barea got past Sudan with 10 men in extra time.
The Malagasy were the ones to open proceedings at Moi International Sports Centre when Mika Razafimahatana set up Felicite Manohantsoa in the ninth minute.
Morocco were however able to respond with goals from Youssef Mehri and Oussama Lamlioui for a 2-1 first half lead.
Toky Rakotondraibe equalised for Madagascar, who were in their first-ever CHAN final, in the 68th minute, but their hopes of taking the game to extra time was crushed when Lamlioui scored the winner for Morocco in the 80th minute to complete his brace.
It was also a third consecutive title for the North African giants having won it in 2018 and 2020 but failed to qualify for the 2022 event.
