CHAN 2024: Madagascar leapfrog Mauritania to finish second in Group B

Madagascar leapfrogged Mauritania to finish second in Group B of the 2024 African Nations Championship following their 2-1 win over Burkina Faso in Zanzibar on Saturday, Afrosport reports.

The Barea were third going in this game, three points behind the Mauritanians whom they knew they will overtake if they defeated the Burkinabe having had the edge over the Mauritanians on head to head.

That is exactly what happened at Amaan Stadium as Fenohasina Razafimaro put them in front after seven minutes and though Burkina Faso equalised in the 25th minute through Souleymane Sangare, Madagascar were ahead once more in the 59th minute when Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa scored from the penalty spot.

The island nation ultimately saw out the game and booked their place in the quarter-finals by finishing second with seven points, three behind group winners and co-hosts Tanzania who played out a goalless draw with Central African Republic in the other simultaneous game.

Mauritania settled for third while Burkina Faso finished fourth and Central African Republic bottom.
