Madagascar reached their first-ever final at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) after their 1-0 extra-time win over Sudan with 10 men in Tuesday’s semi-final of the 2024 edition in Dar es Salaam, Afrosport reports.
The Barea made it back-to-back semi-final appearances after their penalty shootout win over co-hosts Kenya in the quarter-finals.
They were bronze medal winners at the 2022 CHAN tournament in Algeria and were keen to go past the semi-finalists.
The Sudanese were also looking to get past the semi-finals, having beaten 2022 CHAN runners-up Algeria on penalties in the previous round and were two-time CHAN bronze medallists in 2011 and 2018.
Madagascar had more possession and total shots in the first half, but were unable to make anything out of it. They suffered a setback when Harison Randrianantenaina was taken off after four minutes and replaced by Andy Rakotondrajoa.
There was no improvement from either side in the second half, but the Malagasy were reduced to 10 men after Fenohasina Razafimaro was sent off in the 79th minute after receiving two yellow cards.
The numerical disadvantage did not deter the island nation’s spirit as the game went to extra time, and they found the winner in the 116th minute courtesy of Toky Rakotondraibe, who tapped in from close range after Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa laid the ball into his path.
