CHAN 2024: 10-man Kenya defeat Morocco to edge closer to quarter-finals

Co-hosts of the 2024 African Nations Championship, Kenya, got closer to progressing to the quarter-finals after their 1-0 Group A win over Morocco with 10 men in Nairobi on Sunday, Afrosport reports.

The Harambee Stars have been making use of home advantage, bagging a 1-0 win over DR Congo in their group opener before playing out a 1-1 draw with Angola.

Two-time CHAN champions, the Atlas Lions, meanwhile secured a 2-0 win over the Angolans in their own opener.

With the first half at Moi International Sports Centre seeing little in terms of attempts at goal, things came alive in the 42nd minute when Ryan Ogam put the Kenyans in front.

The East Africans were however reduced to 10 men in added time after Chris Erambo was shown a straight red card for a rough foul.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Benni McCarthy’s side were able to hold firm for the rest of second half and secured the three points.

Kenya are top of Group A with seven points, four clear of the Moroccans. They could finish top and make it to the quarter-finals in their maiden CHAN outing with a draw against Zambia in their final group game next Sunday.

The other game saw the Angolans come from behind to edge the Zambians 2-1, substitute Koporal netting a brace in the 79th and and 86th minute after Dominic Chanda put Chipolopolo in front in the 73ed minute.
