CHAN 2022: Ghana coach Walker reflects on maiden win

Ghana head coach Annor Walker has spoken about a lack of support for his team at the Mohamed Hamlaoui Stadium as the Black Stars thumped Sudan 3-1 with 10 men.

The West African giants suffered at shock 2-1 loss to Madagascar in their opener and needed a response against the Sudanese.

The Ghanaians fell behind in 31st minute but equalised in added time of the first half before adding two more goals in the second half courtesy of Daniel Afriyie and Seidu Suraj. Though Afriyie was sent off in added time, it was too little too late for the Sudanese to stage a comeback even with the crowd behind them in the stadium.

“We realised that we don’t have anybody. It was like a son without a mother and father that had to be on their own,” Walker said on the CAF website.

“Coming into the field, we quickly realized that the crowd was rallying behind Sudan, and this made me realize that we have to fight for ourselves. I had to psych up my players and encourage them to work hard for the win.”

Regardless of the lack of Ghanaian fans in Algeria, Walker was pleased with support his team got back home after the Madagascar defeat.

“I am very happy with the win. The loss in the first match made us realise that we have a lot of support from Ghana. They were very supportive and worried about the team,” he continued.

“We received calls from everyone, who said they were supporting and praying for the team to do well.”

Ghana are second in Group C but will have to wait for the outcome between Madagascar and Sudan to determine their qualification fate to the knockout round.
