Former Enyimba goalkeeper Fatau Dauda has thrown his support behind his country, Ghana, for the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Algeria.
The 37-year-old shot-stopper believes the Black Galaxies can triumph in the first-ever 18-team edition of the tournament organised for home-based players and also go on to win their first CHAN title.
The West Africans have only managed to finish second on two occasions: in 2009 and 2014, when they lost to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Libya, respectively.
To excel, the Legon Cities FC goalkeeper explained that the players must be willing to work hard and listen to the head coach, Annor Walker.
“It’s possible if the boys can come together, believe in themselves, listen to the coaches’ instructions because football is now tactics; you listen to what your coaches will teach you to go and play on the field,” Dauda told Joy Sports Ghana.
“They will have some information from the teams they are playing, definitely they have video analysts; they will analyse some teams they are playing against.
“So, if they are determined, they can; I mean win it because they’ve been in the finals before,” he added.
Although he did not feature in the 2-0 defeat to DR Congo in the final, Dauda was part of the Ghanaian team that finished as runners-up in the first edition of the tournament in Ivory Coast.
The Black Stars will battle two-time winners and tournament favourites Morocco, Sudan, and debutants Madagascar in Group C.
They will lock horns with Madagascar in their opening game on Sunday, January 15, at the Mohamed Hamlaoui Stadium in Constantine.
The 2022 CHAN will commence on January 13 and run until February 4 across the four Algerian cities of Annaba, Oran, Constantine, and Algiers, with the final slated to take place in the latter.
