CHAN 2022: CAF make decision on Morocco withdrawal

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have announced that two teams will qualify from Group C following the withdrawal of Morocco from the ongoing African Nations Championship in Algeria.

The Atlas Lions are defending CHAN champions but did not travel to Constantine where they were supposed to be based and execute their Group C games. This was due to diplomatic tensions between Morocco and Algeria since August 2021.

Morocco’s non-participation reduced CHAN teams in the group phase from 18 to 17 and while there was a bit of unknown on how Group C will shape up, CAF have clarified matters including Morocco’s failure to execute their first game against Sudan.

“The [CAF] organising Committee [for CHAN] decided that Group C will be composed of three teams and the first two teams will qualify for the knockout stages,” CAF said in a statement.

“The Organising Committee has referred the matter of Morocco no show at the scheduled fixture against Sudan to the competent judicial body.”

Morocco’s absence leaves Ghana against Sudan and Sudan against Madagascar as the only fixtures left to play in Group C. Madagascar lead the group after securing a shock 2-1 win over Ghana on Sunday.
