The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have made a decision to increase the prize money for participants of the 2022 African Nations Championship.
The move – which is line with the continental governing body’s strategy to increase the commercial value of competitions it organises – will see the CHAN 2022 winner go home with $2 million.
This is is a $750,000 increase from the $1.25 million received by Morocco who won the last tournament held in Cameroon in 2021.
According to information made available on the CAF website, the total prize money for the 16 participants at CHAN 2022 has also increased to $7.9 million, a $2.45 million upgrade from the $5.45 million paid at CHAN 2020.
The CHAN 2022 runners-up will receive $800,000 while the third and fourth-placed teams will be awarded $500,000 apiece.
The losing quarter-finalists will receive $400,000 each while the two countries that finished second in the groups of three teams will earn $300,000 each. This refers to Angola and Cameroon in Group D and E. respectively. The same fee will be given to the other teams that finished third in the groups comprising of four teams. In this case, that goes to Libya, Uganda and Sudan.
The bottom-placed teams in all the groups will get to to earn $200,000 each which are Ethiopia, DR Congo, Mali and Congo Brazzaville.
CHAN 2022 is now at the quarter-final stage with hosts Algeria taking on Ivory Coast and Senegal up against neighbours Mauritania on Friday, while Saturday will see Madagascar take on Mozambique and Niger against Ghana.
