Champions League: Thibaut Courtois to miss Real Madrid’s visit to Lille, Mbappe returns

Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will miss Real Madrid’s visit to Lille in the UEFA Champions League this Wednesday, this Spanish club announced on Monday.

The 32-year-old shot-stopper has reportedly suffered a hip injury with Los Blancos confirming that Courtois has picked up an abductor injury in his left leg.

“After tests carried out today on our player Thibaut Courtois by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with an abductor injury in his left leg. His progress will be monitored,” a statement from the La Liga champions read.

Courtois played the full 90 minutes in their 1-1 draw against Atletico in Sunday’s Madrid derby which was marred by crowd disturbances  at the Metropolitano Stadium.

The former Belgium international, who missed a large part of last season with a knee injury, has started all 10 games for Carlo Ancelotti’s men this season.

However, he will now miss out on their trip to France where they will take on Ligue 1 club Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy with Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin expected to make his first appearance of the season for the European champions.

Meanwhile, French striker Kylian Mbappe, who picked up a left thigh injury and was expected to be out for weeks, has made a miraculous recovery and has been named among Madrid’s travelling entourage to France.

After facing Lille, Los Blancos will take on Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu in their final match before October’s international break.
