Cameroon Player Ratings: Hongla & Onana impress against Swizterland

Cameroon kicked off their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 1-0 loss to Switzerland in Group G at the Al Janoub Stadium.

World Cup debutant Bryan Mbeumo had the best chance of the first half for the Indomitable Lions, but his effort on goal was denied by Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer while Lyon’s Karl Toko-Ekambi could not capitalise on the rebound as his shot was wide off the marks. Cameroon continued to have more of the ball but could not make use of their chances.

Full ratings for the Indomitable Lions:

Goalkeeper:

ANDRE ONANA – 6.5: Faced 5 shots on target and made one last-gasp save but was powerless for the Swiss goal.

Defenders

COLLINS FAI – 6: The Arab-based right back was part of a shaky Cameroon back-four and didn’t do much going forward either.

JEAN-CHARLES CASTELLETO  – 6.5: He was the most lively of the back four and made key last man tackles.

NICOLAS NKOULOU – 6: Was a presence in the defence but could have done better for the goal

NOUHOU TOLO – 6: Had an average performance and should have tried to stop Shaqiri’s cross.

Midfielders

SAMUEL OUM GOUET – 6: Helped his team defensively but was shaky going forward.

ANDRE-FRANK ZAMBO ANGUISSA – 6: The Napoli midfielder was not in his usual form as he rarely got on the ball.

MARTIN HONGLA – 6.5: Was the most active in his team’s midfield and he had an excellent effort saved by Sommer.

Forwards

BRYAN MBEUMO – 6: Playing in his first international tournament, the winger had an effort saved in the first half but should have crossed it to the unmarked Choupo-Moting.

ERIC CHOUPO-MOTING – 6.5: The captain was very lively upfront and should have gotten a goal before being subbed off for Vincent Abubakar

KARL TOKO-EKAMBI – 5: Had a bad game as Switzerland’s Silvan Widmer gave him a tough time. He was subbed off for Georges-Kévin N’Koudou
