Cameroon goalkeeper Onana retires from international football

Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana has announced his retirement from international football after his debacle at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The 26-year-old was in the news for the wrong reasons during the tournament, as a dispute with head coach Rigobert Song led to him being sent home after just one game.

Song was reportedly unhappy with the goalkeeper’s style of play, accusing him of taking too many risks with his feet. The row led to an argument, which made the coach remove Onana from the squad immediately.

In the aftermath of the incident, the embattled goalkeeper has now decided to step down from international duty altogether, confirming his retirement in a lengthy post on his social media channels.

Onana made his debut for the Indomitable Lions in 2016, in a friendly match against Gabon and he made 34 appearances during his six-year international career.

He represented Cameroon in two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations and his only appearance at a FIFA World Cup was in a 1-nil loss to Switzerland at the just-concluded tournament

After leaving Qatar, Onana played once for Inter Milan in a friendly match against Italian Serie B side Reggina.

Inter Milan will resume their Serie A season when they face league leaders Napoli on January 4 at the San Siro Stadium.
