The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has turned down Samuel Eto’o’s resignation as president of the country’s FA after their elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Eto’o who was elected to head Cameroon’s FA in December 2021, was not impressed by the Indomitable Lions’ performance in Ivory Coast which made him exit his role on Monday.
The former Barcelona and Chelsea striker made the decision to quit during the FECAFOOT Executive Committee meeting at the Yaounde Hilton Hotel that was focused on evaluating Cameroon’s performance at AFCON 2023.
After he submitted his resignation, Eto’o urged other members of the FECAFOOT executive to follow him in making a similar decision but they unanimously rejected his resignation by passing a vote of confidence in him.
A statement signed by the FECAFOOT Secretary-General – Blaise Djounang read; “At the end of discussions and subsequent deliberations, the members of the Executive Committee decided to maintain their current mandates and thus unanimously rejected the President’s resignation thereby renewing their confidence in him to continue with the same spirit of reconstruction and development of Cameroon football at all levels as envisaged in his plan adopted by the elective General Assembly of December 11, 2021.”
Cameroon were knocked out of 2023 AFCON after a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the round of 16. The Indomitable Lions settled for bronze at the 2019 AFCON on home soil.
