Cameroon-born Embolo haunts Indomitable Lions in World Cup opener

Breel Embolo was the hero for Switzerland after scoring the only goal in their 1-0 victory over Cameroon at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Embolo had earlier promised not to celebrate against the country where he was born and he kept to the promise after tucking home a right-footed shot in the 48th minute.

Immediately after the goal, the 25-year-old who was born in Yaounde, closed his lips with a smile and spread out his arms and then he apologised to his Switzerland teammates who were eager to celebrate with him.

Embolo left Cameroon with his family at age 5 for France before settling in Switzerland, the European country he has been playing for since 2015 when he made his international debut.

The Monaco star played across the youth ranks of the Swiss national team before getting his Swiss citizenship in December 2014.

Embolo played at European competitions (Euro 2016 and 2020) and he is currently playing at his second World Cup with the Red Crosses.
