Calvin Bassey: Super Eagles defender downplays pressure talk ahead of South Africa match

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey says the team is not under any pressure despite sitting in fifth place ahead of Friday’s FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture against South Africa in Uyo.

Nigeria are second from bottom after Benin defeated Rwanda on Thursday and Lesotho got the better of Zimbabwe earlier on Friday.

Bassey, who played a pivotal role as the Super Eagles finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, reminded fans that the three-time African Champions have not lost a game in the qualifiers, and the players are quite aware of the task ahead.

“We have not lost any game and everyone now knows how good we are, everyone doubted us at the AFCON and we were able to get to the final, I don’t even think we showed them enough of what we have in my opinion, we still have more games to go and we have a team that has been together for two years,” Bassey told NFF Media.

“We have a very young team that’s building something, God willing we will come out with three points in the game”.

Calvin Bassey, who currently plays for Fulham in the Premier League, has earned 23 caps so far for the Super Eagles and will be in contention to start against the South Africans in Uyo.
