Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) club Remo Stars have been knocked out of the CAF Champions League following a 2-0 defeat to their Moroccan counterpart AS FAR on Sunday.
The Sky Blue Stars were beaten 3-2 on aggregate after a controversial game in the second leg of their first preliminary round clash at the Stade Prince Moulay EL Hassan in Rabat, Morocco.
Remo came into Sunday’s game with a 2-1 advantae from their first leg clash in Ikene a week ago thanks to goals from captain Nduka Junior and Super Eagles defender Sodiq Ismail, either side of a Joel Beya strike for the visitors.
However, the Moroccans, who needed to win by a two-goal margin to progress to the next round, were aided by second half goals from Beya and El Amine Zouhzouh, who scored from the penalty spot after a controversial spot kick was awarded to the hosts.
The defeat meant Remo, the 2023-24 NPFL runners-up, exit continental football for the third consecutive year.
This means only two Nigerian teams remain in the continental competitions after El Kanemi Warriors were also eliminated by Benin Republic club Dadje FC.
