The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have made changes to the prize money structure for CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, giving both international club competitions a major increase of 40%.
The increase in prize money is part of CAF President, Patrice Motsepe’s commitment to make African football competitions more competitive and self-sustaining.
Motsepe had earlier announced this year an increase in the Champions League prize money to $2.5 million but the winner will now get a $1.5 million boost that totals $4 million.
The Confederation Cup prize money was previously $1.25 million but the champion will get a $750,000 raise that take it up to $2 million.
The Champions League runner-up will earn $2 million while the Confederation Cup runner-up will rack in $1 million. The Champions League and Confederation Cup semi-finalists will take home $1.2 million and $750,00 respectively and $900,000 and $550,000 for the quarter-finalists of the two competitions.
The teams that finish in the Champions League group stage will earn $700,000 while those in the Confederation Cup will earn $400,000.
The Champions League finalists will be decided this weekend as Al Ahly and Esperance do battle in the second leg of the semi-finals while Mamelodi Sundowns take on reigning champions Wydad Casablanca.
The Confederation Cup finalists have been decided with USM Alger and Young Africans progressing following their respective semi-final victories over ASEC Mimosas and Marumo Gallants.
