CAF Confederation Cup: Rivers United & 15 others know group stage fate

Nigeria’s flagbearer in the second-tier of African club football, Rivers United, will use the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo as the venue for their home matches in this season’s CAF Confederation Cup.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed this on Tuesday after releasing the list of approved stadiums for each team in the group stage of the competition.

The announcement makes it the second year in a row that the 2022 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions have been denied the opportunity to play at their traditional home ground, the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Rivers United, who were knocked out of the CAF Confederations Cup in the quarterfinals last season after losing 2-0 on aggregate to the Young Africans of Tanzania, will play their group games this season at the famous stadium called the Nest of Champions for the second consecutive year.

Stanley Eguma’s men are drawn in Group C along with Club Africain of Tunisia, Ghana’s Dream FC, and APC Lobito of Angola.

The group stage of the competition will kick off on November 26, and Rivers United will be hoping to go all the way and etch their name in the history books as the first Nigerian side to win the CAF Confederation Cup.
